Breast cancer stage

Author:
Category: Cancer: Breast Cancer

In case of breast cancer, some of the cells in your breast begin growing abnormally. These cells divide more rapidly than healthy cells do and may spread (metastasize) through your breast, to your lymph nodes or to other parts of your body. The most common type of breast cancer begins in the milk-producing ducts, but cancer may also begin in the lobules or in other breast tissue
In most cases, it isn't clear what causes normal breast cells to become cancerous. Doctors do know that only 5 percent to 10 percent of breast cancers are inherited. Breast cancer is the most fatal disease and is the major cause of cancer death among women. According to American cancer society 50% of breast cancer patients will die from the breast cancer diagnosed cases, however the rates have been dropping constantly since 1990 owing to earlier detection by means of screaming. Breast cancer women cases are considerably very high as compared to men. Each woman’s breast cancer risk maybe higher or lower depending upon several factors. This depends upon family history, genetics, age of menstruation and some other unknown factors. The probability of breast cancer risk developing in the next ten years indicates that higher the age greater the risk. For example the breast cancer risk is 1 out of 2000 at age of 20 years, but 1 out of 24 at the age of 70 years.
The breast cancer risk and its survival are based on the size of tumor. The size is very important to determine for invasive and non invasive cancer as well as lymph nodes are involved or it is metastases (i.e.) spread beyond the breast. To determine how far cancer has spread doctors use a staging system. The most common system is TNM staging system where

T (stands for the size of Tumor)
L (stands for lymph node involvement)
                                           M (stands for metastases)

Similarly TX means tumor cannot be measured or found, T0 means there is not any evidence of primary cancer.
T1 and T4 describe the stage and size of the cancer. The higher the number the higher is the size of tumor grown up in the breast. N stands (node involvement) categorised whether the cancer has reached the near by lymph nodes. Moreover NX means the near by lymph is not measurable and unfound. N0 means near by nodes don’t have cancer. Similarly N1 and N3 numbers tell us about size, location and number of lymph nodes involved. Higher the number of N the more number of lymph involved.
M means (metastatic breast cancer) i.e. whether the cancer has spread doo the near by other parts of the body. MX means metastasis breast cancer can’t be measured or not found. M0 means there are no distant metastasis. M1 means distant metastasis was found.
